Erjituan is a traditional Bunun tribe located in Taoyuan District, Kaohsiung City. In the early days, tribespeople migrated here from Wangxiang in Nantou and established a lifestyle based on slash-and-burn agriculture. Due to its high altitude and broad field of vision, it is also regarded by the tribespeople as a place protected by ancestral spirits. The place name "Erjituan" (Group Two) originated from the administrative division during the Japanese colonial period, when the Japanese divided the Bunun tribes in Taoyuan District into "Group One," "Group Two," and "Group Three," corresponding to different settlement systems. "Erjituan" was the centrally located tribe among them, hence its name.
The Baoshan Tribe (Bao-shan) is a Han Chinese settlement near Erjituan. Located on a river terrace of a tributary in the upper reaches of the Laonong River at an altitude of about 850 meters, the climate is cool and humid, making it very suitable for the growth of cherry trees. In the early days during the Japanese colonial period and the early post-war period, this area mainly planted temperate fruits such as peaches, pears, and apples, and was an important cash crop area in the mountainous areas of Kaohsiung. However, with the outflow of rural population, the fruit industry gradually declined. In the early 2010s, the Community Development Association began to plant a large number of cherry trees, creating today's famous "Baoshan Cherry Blossom Park" and successfully transforming into a sightseeing and leisure tribe. The "Taoyuan Cherry Blossom Season" event is held around the Lunar New Year every year, attracting tens of thousands of tourists up the mountain to enjoy the flowers.
The cherry blossom varieties in Erjituan and Baoshan Cherry Blossom Park are quite diverse, ranging from Taiwan cherry blossoms and Kawazu cherry blossoms to double cherry blossoms. By taking advantage of the difference in blooming periods of different varieties, a flower viewing period of up to about two months is created. Overall, the best viewing period is from late December to mid-to-late February of the following year:
It is recommended to visit from late January to early February, so that you can enjoy the overlapping period of Kawazuzakura in full bloom and Yaezakura in bloom at the same time. You can also avoid the period when the mountain cherry blossoms have ended, and get the best light for taking photos in the cherry blossom tunnel.
