Meinong Lake not only serves as an irrigation function but is also the core lifeline of Meinong's tobacco culture. During the Japanese colonial period, Taiwan was an important tobacco supplier for Japan. Meinong grew a large amount of yellow tobacco due to its suitable climate and soil conditions. Before the tobacco leaves are harvested, they must go through a drying process. At that time, many 'tobacco barns' were set up around the lake, becoming the most unique cultural landscape in Meinong. Today, several tobacco barns converted into exhibition spaces still remain by the lake, where travelers can enter to see the traditional tobacco drying processes and equipment.
1980 After the 1990s, as Taiwan's tobacco industry faded into history, Meinong Lake transformed into a sightseeing and leisure lake. The Kaohsiung City Government comprehensively renovated the round-lake trail, pavilions, lotus viewing platforms, and bikeways, and completed the planning of the 'Meinong Lake Pheasant-tailed Jacana Restoration Area' in 2010, allowing the jacanas, which had disappeared due to agricultural use, to gradually return to this wetland habitat. Today, Meinong Lake has become one of the most important ecological lakes in the Kaohsiung area and passed the selection of the 'National Important Wetland Conservation Action Plan' in 2017.
In Meinong's local culture, Meinong Lake is also a common stage for residents' lives. Early residents would wash clothes and fetch water by the lake in the early morning, take a walk and cool off by the lake in the afternoon, and children would chase and play on the round-lake trail. This is a common childhood memory for many people born in the 1950s and 60s. Today, the 'Meinong Lakeside Park' still features many donation monuments from early residents, recording the contributions of local gentry to the construction of the lake area. Through this historical context, when travelers visit Meinong Lake, they not only enjoy the natural scenery but also deeply experience the cultural heritage of the Meinong Hakka settlement.
In recent years, Meinong Lake has further integrated eco-tourism and environmental education, collaborating with the Kaohsiung City Government to launch the 'Wetland Academy' activity, inviting professional ecological guides to lead families to learn about wetland flora and fauna such as jacanas, lotuses, and yellow water lilies. The park also features bird-watching pavilions and plant interpretation signs, transforming Meinong Lake from a traditional agricultural reservoir into a diverse venue combining sightseeing, recreation, and ecological conservation. It is also an important base for promoting sustainable environmental education in the Greater Kaohsiung area.
